What are the compliance requirements for a driving test car in Queensland?

The driving test car in Queensland must meet specific requirements to ensure safety and compliance. Here are the key requirements:

  • The vehicle must have a current Certificate of Inspection (COI) unless exempt.
  • It must have working seatbelts and head restraints fitted to both front seats.
  • The windscreen must be free of cracks, chips, and damage in the area swept by the wipers.
  • All tyres must have a tread depth of at least 1.5mm on every part of the tyre that touches the road.
  • The vehicle must be roadworthy with no known defects, such as faulty Takata airbags.
  • The car must be currently registered and display the required label if it is hybrid, electric, or hydrogen fuel cell-powered.
  • The vehicle must be clean inside and out, with a clear driver's view through the windshield.
  • The vehicle must have functioning headlights, brake lights, signals, and mirrors.
  • The tyres must be properly inflated and the brakes in good working condition.
  • The vehicle must be of the same type of tyre construction, not the same brand exactly.

These requirements ensure that the vehicle is suitable for the driving test and that the test is conducted safely and fairly.

How long does a test go for?

25–30 minutes.

Can I drive on an expired licence?

No, you cannot.

Do I need to bring my driver's licence with me to my test?

Yes, either the physical card or on the app.

What else do I need to bring to my test?

A debit or credit card, physical or on your phone, to pay for your new P licence.

How can I prepare myself so that I have a good chance of passing my test the first time?

Read and study the DRIVEable Driving School Workbook. Study the Queensland Road Rules and road signs. Practice the test routes many times. Practice going in and out of the Department of Transport, where your test will be held.

You gave me a workbook. Is it really important that I read it?

Yes, of course!

You gave me the test route areas. Do I really need to go and practice those areas?

Yes, 100%.

What are the manoeuvres I need to do, and how many will I do?

Straight line reverse, 30 metres. Reverse parallel park. Turn in the road, otherwise known as a three-point turn. Left-hand U-turn. Right-hand U-turn. T-U-turn. U-turn at traffic lights. U-turn on a double-laned roundabout. For automatic cars, a hill-start.

Do I have to practice all of them if they're only going to ask me to do two?

Yes, because you won't know which two they will ask you until you are in your test.

How many minors can I get?

Up to 8 – the 9th is a fail. But some minor errors you can fail on just a few.

My friends told me that the examiners are horrible. Is this true?

No, they are not. They want you to pass, but if they think you are not safe, you will fail.

Are the examiners scary?

No, they are just doing their job.

Should I do an hour lesson before my test?

Yes, it's advisable. It's a perfect time to go over some last-minute manoeuvres or test areas. But more importantly, it's a time to settle those nerves.

What does the test package include, and why should I do it?

This package offers a comprehensive service designed to make your driving test day as smooth and stress-free as possible. Your DRIVEable Driving Instructor will either meet you at the test centre (TMR) or pick you up from your preferred location – be it home, work, or school.

You'll get approximately 60 minutes of pre-test driving, which gives you the chance to practice any manoeuvres that are still making you nervous or revisit tricky intersections. The instructor will also assist with checking in at the Test Centre and help you complete all the necessary pre-test paperwork.

After you've passed your test, your instructor will accompany you into the Department of Transport to help you obtain your new driver's licence – congratulations! Throughout the process, your instructor is there to calm your nerves, boost your confidence, and answer any last-minute questions, ensuring you feel prepared and supported every step of the way.

We can also book your Driving Test fee with the Dept. of Transport for a fee of $72.00.

Can you come in the test with me?

Yes, of course.

What do I need to do once I pass my test?

Go back into the test centre, wait for your name to be called, and go to the counter. You will be asked if you want a new photo and how many years you want your licence. I suggest getting 5 years, as the price goes up every year, so it's cheaper in the long run.

What happens if I fail my test?

You book the second one as soon as possible.
